An Icelandic lifting company DS Lausnir has added two Grove all-terrain cranes to its fleet, both designed to handle the country’s extreme winter conditions.
DS Lausnir recently took delivery of a Grove GMK5250XL-1, just months after receiving a GMK5150L-1. Each crane is fitted with custom features for sub-zero temperatures, boosting durability, comfort, and visibility during the dark and icy months from November to March.
“Iceland doesn’t give you easy weather or easy logistics. We wanted cranes that just get on with the job,” said Daníel Sigurðarson, owner of DS Lausnir. “Our new Grove GMK5150L-1 and GMK5250XL-1 give us the reach, roadability, and all-weather readiness we need for year-round work in Reykjavík and across the country.”
The GMK5250XL-1 offers a 250-tonne lifting capacity and a 78.5-metre main boom. It includes Grove’s snow cover package with carrier cab protection, hose and cable reel covers, and valve block cover. Other additions include winter tyres, auxiliary heaters for both cabs, and LED lights for better visibility in low light.
The GMK5150L-1 has a 150-tonne capacity and a 60-metre main boom. It features the same snow cover package and winter tyres, plus a diesel cab heater that also preheats the engine and can be set on a 24-hour timer. The crane also includes a 270-degree bird’s eye camera and an upgraded LED work light package with retractable and cab-mounted lights.
“Seeing the Grove GMK5250XL-1 follow the Grove GMK5150L-1 so quickly speaks to our confidence in the product and Manitowoc’s regional support,” Daníel said.
Both cranes are now working out of Reykjavík and have already been deployed on local projects. The GMK5250XL-1 was recently used to install precast concrete floors weighing up to 11 tonnes at a 40-metre radius at the Þorraholt site in Garðabær, part of a residential development by ÞG-Verk ehf.
As the winter season sets in, the company is ready to take on the toughest lifting challenges across Iceland.
