Tadano all terrain cranes complete dexterous tandem lift

Two Tadano all-terrain cranes have completed a dexterous tandem lift in India to complete repairs after a cyclone severely damaged a cement plant’s conveyor bridge.

As the cyclone had struck so severely, the damaged conveyor bridge in question needed to have a section of it completely replaced. Indian crane hire company, Steel Carriers, was subsequently contracted to lift a 50m-long, 50-tonne steel structure to a height of 60m between two silos at the cement plant in Gujarat, lifting at a radius of 40m. Opting to keep its larger, lattice boom crawler cranes in the shed for another day, director of Steel Carriers, Sunil Makad, elucidated on the reasons for choosing to complete a tandem lift with two Tadano all-terrain cranes.

“We could have used one of our big Tadano lattice boom crawler cranes for this job, but in this case, the all-terrain cranes proved to be the better option,” he said. “That’s partly because we could get them to the site quicker, and partly because they were easier to position in the very limited space available at the site.”

Choosing to deploy its Tadano AC 1000-9 and AC 500-1, it took the Indian crane hire company three days to transport both cranes and 17 support trucks from its branch in Mumbai to the jobsite in Gujarat. After the transportation process, the team took two days to configure the machines in HA-SSL for the AC 1000-9 using the 100m main boom and Sideways Superlift – due to the lack of space for a fly jib – and in WIHI-SSL for the AC 500-1.

This proved to be the biggest challenge in lift planning and engineering for the Indian company: completing a tandem lift with two cranes in different configurations, as Makad said. Ultimately, however, the team completed the tandem lift, with the two cranes successfully placing the 50-tonne load to the required 60m height, rotating the load by 90 degrees to set it in its final place.

“It just goes to show how quickly and efficiently you can get even very difficult jobs done if you have a highly skilled and experienced team and the right cranes,” said Makad. “That’s why, for me, the combination of our people and Tadano cranes always makes for the absolute dream team.”
