Smart crane technology boosts lifts at Penrith Stadium

John Holland has recorded a major lift in productivity after integrating the Vita Load Navigator (VLN) into crane operations at the Penrith Stadium Redevelopment.

The technology helped the team exceed its original targets by replacing traditional tagline methods with more precise load control. A forecast of eight lifts per day increased to a consistent 11 to 13 lifts using a single crane, delivering a 40 per cent increase in production.

Senior Site Manager at John Holland, Ray Congerton, said, “With the introduction of the VLN the plats were literally flying in.”

The improved performance came in a high-pressure construction environment where time on the crane hook directly affects costs. The VLN provided greater precision, improved personnel safety and more certainty around scheduling.

The secret behind the massive production spike the team are seeing? Autonomous repeatability! By pre-setting a compass heading into the Vita Load Navigator (VLN) system the operator can bring the load to within 1 degree of the required operation with a single button press. No more fighting the wind. No more manual correction!

Erne Lifting was on site supporting the project and said the results showed how smarter control systems can make a real difference on major infrastructure builds.

The Penrith Stadium Redevelopment highlights how new lifting technologies are helping Australian projects achieve better outcomes without relying solely on larger machines.

The redevelopment of Penrith Stadium has been funded by the NSW Government.
