Safe Work Australia seeks safety reforms for cranes in maritime sector

Safe Work Australia is calling for feedback on how to improve the safety of crane operations in the maritime sector.

Cranes used in dynamic environments, such as on vessels, face unique work health and safety risks due to ship movement and changing maritime conditions. Despite these challenges, they are often operated without specific licensing, training, or risk controls designed for these conditions.

Safe Work Australia is inviting stakeholders to share their views on potential reform options outlined in a discussion paper available on its Consultation Hub. The organisation said these options may change as more evidence, policy analysis and feedback are considered.

Any regulatory changes will require agreement from Safe Work Australia members. If significant changes are proposed, approval from work health and safety ministers will also be needed.

The consultation is open to anyone with an interest or experience in the port and maritime sectors, as well as crane operations. This includes regulators, government agencies, unions, workers, business and industry representatives, legal professionals and researchers.

Submissions can be made through the Consultation Hub, with the consultation open until 11:59 pm (AEST) on Monday 27 April 2026.
