Sarens has taken delivery of a new fleet of Grove rough-terrain cranes, with most of the machines already at work on one of Europe’s largest petrochemical construction projects.
The company has added four 100-tonne capacity Grove GRT8100-1 cranes and one 80-tonne capacity Grove GRT780 to its global fleet. Four of the new cranes, along with the GRT780, have been deployed to the INEOS Project ONE development in Antwerp, Belgium.
The cranes were built at Manitowoc’s factory in Niella Tanaro, Italy, before being shipped to Sarens. Manitowoc is also providing ongoing parts, service and maintenance support through its local service teams and global customer support network.
Project ONE is centred on the construction of a new ethane cracker that will convert ethane gas into ethylene. The facility has been designed to use hydrogen generated during the cracking process as a lower-carbon fuel for its furnaces.
The project uses modular construction, with large sections built offsite and transported to Antwerp by ship. Some of the modules weigh up to 6,000 tonnes and measure as much as 50 metres long, 40 metres wide and 60 metres high.
The wider development also includes storage tanks, extensive pipework, pipe racks, cable routes, roads, underground infrastructure and other site facilities.
Sarens is responsible for the project’s heavy lifting and transport work, including road and sea transport, module assembly and precision lifting operations. The company is also managing the planning, coordination and execution of all lifting and transport activities.
The Grove GRT8100-1 features a 47-metre main boom and a bi-fold swingaway jib that extends from 10.1 metres to 17.1 metres. The crane also has a cab that tilts up to 20 degrees to improve operator visibility, along with four onboard cameras that provide views of the crane, hoist drum and load.
The Grove GRT780 offers a similar boom and jib configuration and can travel with loads of up to 15.2 tonnes on the hook, allowing operators to move loads around site more efficiently.
Both crane models are equipped with Manitowoc’s CCS, MAXbase variable outrigger positioning and Grove CONNECT telematics platform. The features are designed to improve lifting flexibility while allowing remote diagnostics, maintenance planning and operational monitoring.
