Multi-crane lift completes 120-tonne bridge install

Sarens has completed the installation of a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge at Dikke Linde over the A12 in Laken, Brussels.

Commissioned by CSM, the project aims to provide a safer and more accessible crossing for cyclists and pedestrians, supporting better urban mobility and sustainability in the area.

The work was carried out in a busy urban environment with ongoing roadworks and heavy traffic. Careful planning allowed the lift to be completed smoothly despite the tight conditions.

The bridge measures 46 metres long and 9 metres wide and weighs 120 tonnes. The original plan was to use two 700-tonne cranes, but the structure was heavier than expected. An additional 200-tonne crane and a lifting triangle were brought in to help position the bridge correctly. Once the main cranes had stabilised the load, the smaller crane was removed so the bridge could be placed precisely.

Sarens used an AC700 with guided boom, an LTM 1230-5.1 and an LTM 1650-8.1 for the lift. The cranes were mobilised from the company’s headquarters and reached the site in less than 15 minutes. Road closures were managed to allow equipment to arrive in stages, with all cranes set up and ready by midday. The lift began at 1pm and was completed within the planned schedule.

The job site was confined by trees and constant traffic, requiring careful coordination. Around ten crew members worked together to carry out the lift with accuracy at every stage. The operation attracted strong public interest and was attended by the Minister of Mobility, underlining the importance of the project to Brussels’ transport network.

The Dikke Linde bridge installation highlights Sarens’ capability to deliver complex infrastructure projects in dense urban areas. Beyond the engineering challenge, the project improves local connectivity and supports a safer and more sustainable transport future for Brussels.
