MSG Krandienst receive new Grove all terrain crane

MSG Krandienst, a crane hire company in the south of Germany, lift a 68-tonne derailed train car with their new Grove all terrain crane.

German company MSG Krandienst has taken delivery of a new Grove GMK6400-1 all terrain crane.

The crane hire company’s latest addition to its fleet impressed everyone on its first job where it was required to recover a derailed train car the day after arriving at its news home.

Weighing 68 tonnes, the derailed train car was split into two 34 tonne sections for extraction, with Grove’s all terrain crane more than capable for the task according to MSG operator Yannick Kempf.

“The controls are so intuitive on the GMK6400-1 that I was immediately able to operate it,” he said. “It was great to be able to test the new addition on a jobsite the day after it arrived.”

A large fence situated between the train car and the closest spot for a salvage trailer as well as the impending time pressure of returning the rail back to its normal service added further complexities to the job. However, the Grove, with a 400-tonne capacity and superior load charts when compared to other six-axle cranes in the market, provided the perfect solution for MSG Krandienst.

Adding to the crane’s agility and power is the MegaWingLift attachment, which boosts the crane’s capacity and can be installed in under 20 minutes. Furthemore, the crane’s intuitive handling and CCS enabled the successful completion of the task. The GMK6400-1 was configured with a 44.8-metre boom and 115 tonnes of counterweight for the salvage work. The lifts were managed at a 24-metre radius, and the entire project was wrapped up within a day.

The GMK6400-1, an upgrade on the 6400, is able to take on jobs usually completed by a seven or eight axle crane. Additionally, it holds an increased capacity on its main boom thanks to its variable outrigger positioning system MAXbase.
