Completing the lift in tandem with GVP Fabricators and Multiplex, the Victorian crane hire company was contracted to install the bridge over a busy road and connect the new, $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital to Victoria University.

“Footscray is transforming into a leading precinct for health, education, and employment. The unveiling of the pedestrian footbridge linking the New Footscray Hospital and Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus is a shining example,” said Victoria University Chancellor, Steve Bracks AC.

“For VU, this bridge symbolises a vital connection. It will strengthen our collaboration with Western Health and will amplify opportunities for VU students and researchers – the region’s future skilled health professionals.”

To complete the job, Metcalf deployed its Tadano CC3800-1, equipping the crane with 60m of main boom and 225 tonnes of counterweight. After the crane was configured, it was then tracked out onto the road to allow erection of the machine.

The CC3800-1 possesses a maximum lifting capacity of 650 metric tonnes at a radius of 12m and a maximum load moment of 9152 tonne-metres, with the crane being able to lift at heights of up to 183m thanks to its ‘Boom Booster’ feature.

The $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital will possess more than 500 beds, hold the capacity to care for an additional 15,000 patients, and be able to look after 20,000 extra people in the emergency department on an annual basis.

Since the start of construction, more than three million hours of work have been carried out on site including 230,000 hours by apprentices, trainees and cadets, and employing more than 2,000 workers at the peak. They have poured more than 150,000 tonnes of concrete and installed more than 5,000 glass panels.

Metcalf Cranes operates a mobile and crawler crane hire fleet ranging from 4.5 tonnes through to its 650-tonne crawler crane. The company provides lifting solutions to the construction, infrastructure, and wind farm sectors across Victoria.
