Maputo Port upgrades capacity with two new mobile cranes

Liebherr has delivered two LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes to the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC).

The cranes have a high capacity and fast movement, which makes them well suited for bulk handling operations.

Maputo is the capital of East African State Mozambique, located on the Indian Ocean. It is one of the most important transhipment ports for goods on the east coast of Africa.

The Port of Maputo purchased the cranes due to its growth and increasing customer demand. By adding an additional two unites to the fleet. MPDC aims to continue its development into the future.

The bulk handling capabilities of the cranes are a key part of the upgrade, as ferrochrome is one of the main products handled at the port.

Liebherr has also extended its existing service contract to include the new devices to ensure the best possible reliability and availability for the cranes.

“In addition to the two mobile harbour cranes, we have recently acquired 14 payloaders, 8 tractors, 8 forklifts and 2 rail excavators (for wagon unloading operations),” said MPDC Chief Operations Officer Marla Calado.

“This investment is in line with the need to improve the berth usage and the rehabilitation and deepening works that are taking place at the moment.”
