A used rough-terrain crane was overhauled in less than two weeks by Manitowoc’s team in Brazil, getting it ready just in time for a construction project in São Paulo.
The crane in question is a Grove RT540E. It had been working in a rental fleet in Rio Grande do Sul since 2012. When it was listed for sale, a São Paulo-based construction company snapped it up almost immediately, with plans to deploy it just two weeks after the deal was closed. That tight timeline gave Manitowoc’s team only 12 days to complete a full refurbishment.
“Our experienced team delivered and finished the job in record time,” said Roberto Ota, Regional Business Manager at Manitowoc Brazil.
Manitowoc’s EnCORE team handled the refurbishment, which covered:
• Repairs to hydraulic cylinders, wiring harness, and engine
• Replacement of display units and interior upholstery
• A fresh coat of paint
• An upgrade to the crane’s control system
The total cost of the overhaul came to about 40 per cent of what a new crane of the same model would cost. The refurbished machine was also delivered with a new manufacturer’s warranty.
About the Grove RT540E:
The Grove RT540E is a rough-terrain crane with a lifting capacity of 35 tonnes. It features:
• A four-section boom that extends up to 31 metres
• An optional telescopic jib that adds between 7.9 and 13.7 metres
• A maximum tip height of 47 metres
Its compact size and manoeuvrability make it ideal for projects with tight site conditions.
Rising demand for used cranes
Luciano Dias, Director of Sales and Product Support at Manitowoc Brazil, says demand for used cranes is growing quickly in the region. This has led to a surge in EnCORE refurbishment projects, prompting the company to invest in more technicians and increase its parts stock.
“This RT540E was traded in as part of the down payment for two larger Grove cranes—a brand-new GMK6450-1 and a used GMK5250L,” said Dias. “By offering flexible trade-in options, we’re helping customers invest in new equipment while keeping the used crane market active.”
