Liebherr tower cranes aid restoration of an iconic landmark

Two Liebherr EC-B tower cranes are playing a key role in restoring the historic Parador de Santiago de Compostela, one of Galicia’s most iconic landmarks. The restoration is part of a nationwide program to preserve Spain’s cultural heritage, with a total investment of €89.5 million.

Located in Santiago’s bustling Plaza del Obradoiro, opposite the famous cathedral, the project faces challenges like limited space and high visitor traffic. The Liebherr 71 EC-B and 125 EC-B cranes, supplied by Maga Vigo, have been chosen for their precise control, compact design, and low noise levels—making them ideal for such sensitive, heritage-protected sites.

The restoration includes renewing the building’s facades, repairing Renaissance courtyards, renovating the historic cornice, and conserving the royal chapel and its dome. The cranes operate at heights of 36 and 52 metres, with jib lengths of 50 and 58 metres, allowing efficient and safe work on the building’s roof and facade.

“This project is a great source of pride and joy for us,” said Jesús Gañete, Managing Director of Maga Vigo. Similarly, Gruas Norte expressed their enthusiasm: “Taking part in the restoration of a national monument in our home city of Santiago de Compostela means a great deal to our entire team.”

Part of a broader initiative led by the Paradores hotel group, this project involves restoring 40 historic buildings across Spain. The work at the Parador de Santiago is expected to take around 19 months, with €14 million allocated in the program’s first phase.
