In order to lift artworks weighing several tonnes, a Liebherr LTC 1050-3.1 mobile crane has been used to squeeze through tight castle corridors in Germany.

The compact crane needed to pass through two narrow points through the fortification’s walls to get to the artworks.

This included a particularly challenging task, as the crane needed to pass through a 25-metre tunnel inside the castle structure, with the distance between the crane and the wall being as little as two centimetres in some places.

Precise steering manoeuvres and commands were required from the vehicle marshals to ensure the crane could safely makes its way from the ditch gate to the large fortress ditches.

The crane controller had to lower the vehicle by more than 10 centimetres using the axle suspension before the crane could drive into the fortress. The telescopic boom was also lowered to reduce the clearance height by 80 centimetres, to just over three metres in total.

The compact crane was able to showcase its strengths when hoisting the works of art, which were large tree trunk structures weighing around five tonnes. These had to be moved from the surrounding fortification structure at a height of seven metres into the ditches, where they could be loaded onto trucks for transportation.

With a total of five steering programs available and a turning circle of 7.5 metres, the LTC 1050-3.1’s manoeuvrability as also key for the job.
