Liebherr LTM 1300-6.3 mobile crane provides key access for Stevenson Cranes

Stevenson Cranes has deployed its LTM 1300-6.3 mobile crane for a construction project on a data centre in Chicago.

Chicago-based lifting company Stevenson Cranes, Rigging, and Heavy Haul has deployed its Liebherr LTM 1300-6.3 mobile crane to complete construction works on the Server Farm Data Centre.

The project required a replacement upgrade of the cooling systems including demolition of old structures, new piping, new steel platforms to support added weight, and a variety of updated equipment to better serve the data centre. The Midwest-based company, committed to helping to rebuild Chicago’s industrial areas, opted for the Liebherr LTM 1300-6.3 mobile crane because of the multiple access issues encountered at the job site, according to Stevenson’s Director of Business Operations, Wesley Austin.

“The Server Farm Data Centre had difficult site access issues where the North, South, and East sides were inaccessible due to underground utilities and elevated roadways,” he said. “Another obstacle of this project was the 12m tall power lines running along the sidewalk that we needed to maintain a safe distance from.”

The 300-tonne crane possesses a main telescopic boom of 90m long that can be carried on public roads with an axle load of 12 tonnes.

Featuring a 90m telescopic main boom that can be carried on public roads with an axle load of 12 tonnes, the LTM 1300-6.3 mobile crane can achieve a maximum hoist height of 124m thanks to its jib extension combinations. With the data centre building being over 30m high, Stevenson needed to establish the crane in one position and complete all its lifts from one spot – which the crane allowed, according to Austin.

“Liebherr’s LTM 1300-6.3 gave us the best option for maintaining an optimal distance off the power lines, while still reaching all the areas needed from one location,” said Austin. “This crane also did not require a luffer setup which would have been less advantageous for a crane that will have to periodically perform work over the next several months.”

Founded in 1989 by Donna Stevenson, the crane, rigging, and heavy haul company is Chicago’s first woman-owned crane service. Offering over 2,000 lifts, telehandlers, and support equipment, Stevenson is one of the largest-locally-owned crane service providers in the Midwest supporting over 300 employees and owning a fleet of over 200 cranes – of which all the all-terrains are Liebherr products, with Liebherr’s Regional Sales Manager, Erik Peterson, praising Stevenson as a “loyal partner”.

“They pride themselves on having the most modern fleet of cranes in the industry and they trust in Liebherr to provide that to them,” he said. “When we introduce a new model of crane to the market, Stevenson is right there with us.”
