Liebherr cranes help Scandinavia welcome its second tallest skyscraper

In southern Sweden, the impressive NKT Tower 3 has reached completion, standing as Scandinavia’s second tallest tower at 200 metres. This feat of engineering was achieved with remarkable speed, thanks to two powerful Liebherr cranes and efficient project management.

The construction of the NKT Tower 3, part of the world’s largest high-voltage submarine cable factory, was undertaken by Skanska. The tower will play a crucial role in supplying vital components to wind turbines and solar parks. The project was supported by the Liebherr Tower Crane Center and Tower Crane Solutions, who provided a tailored crane solution to meet the tight 90-day construction deadline.

A shift work system allowed the tower to rise by an average of 2.6 metres per day, enabling it to reach its full height in just three months. The cranes, a 542 HC-L 12/24 Litronic and a 258 HC-L 10/18 Fibre, were instrumental in the construction, reaching final heights of 213 and 210 metres, respectively.

Liebherr ensured continuous operation by positioning essential spare parts directly on site. The collaboration between the Tower Crane Center, Tower Crane Solutions, and the Swedish team, including Skanska’s Head of Tower Cranes South District, Fredrik Funke, and Anders Ekström from Ekström Lyftkonsult AB, ensured the project’s success within the stipulated timeframe.

“To secure 24/7 operation, we moved key spare parts such as a new fibre rope and various modules directly onto site in advance so that time isn’t lost if these are needed,” says Stefan Gröber, Head of TCC Used & Rental.

This rapid construction project not only highlights advanced engineering but also the efficient collaboration of international teams and resources, marking a significant achievement in Sweden’s industrial landscape.
