Liebherr builds 2000th mobile harbour crane for Marcegaglia

Liebherr 2000th crane

Liebherr has reached a milestone with the production of its 2000th mobile harbour crane (LHM). The German manufacturer has been making these cranes for 50 years and has been a global market leader for more than 15. The milestone crane, an LHM 600, has been built for Italian steel company Marcegaglia and will be delivered to the port of Ravenna in Italy.

The LHM 600 is designed for heavy-duty port operations, with a lifting capacity of up to 154 tonnes (t) and an outreach of 61 metres (m). Marcegaglia will use it to handle steel products such as coils, billets, and plates. This is the sixth Liebherr mobile harbour crane in the company’s fleet.

One of the standout features of this crane is its custom-designed slewing platform. The crane is designed in a way to reflect the heritage of both the crane’s origin in Rostock, Germany, and its new home in Ravenna, Italy. The platform includes artistic elements from both cities, including the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna and a lighthouse representing Liebherr’s industrial roots in Rostock.

Marcegaglia and Liebherr have been working together for more than two decades. The first Liebherr crane arrived at Ravenna in 2001, and since then, the fleet has grown to six. The LHM 600 is now the largest in the port, increasing its handling capacity and supporting Marcegaglia’s logistics operations.

A handover ceremony is planned for the summer in Ravenna to mark the occasion. Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales of mobile harbour cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH, described the LHM 600 as a symbol of the company’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions.
