Global Wind Projects completes first project, acquires new Liebherr

Global Wind Projects completes maintenance and installation services on a wind farm in Galway, Ireland.

UK-based wind sector crane and installation services company Global Wind Projects (GWP) has announced the completion of its first onshore wind project in Ireland.

The team at GWP commenced its operations in December 2022, having been awarded contracts from its long-term client Nordex to provide installation and M&E services at wind farms in Galway, Mayo and Offaly.

The first of the three contracts saw GWP provide installation and M&E services for 19 N149 turbines at the RockGrid owned 101mW Ardderroo Wind Farm in County Galway.

Following completion of works at Ardderroo, GWP will complete the installation of a further five onshore wind turbines for Nordex at ABO Wind Ireland’s Sheskin Wind Farm in County Mayo and 29 more at SSE’s Yellow River Wind Farm in County Offaly.

“We are delighted to have made a successful first foray into the Irish market; at Ardderroo it was pleasing to be able to mobilise our team at short notice to assist a valued, long-term client,” said GWP General Manager Ryan Burke. “This contract, and the two follow on projects, will see us mobilise a team of 40 personnel to sites in Galway, Mayo and Offaly and in due course we will establish a separate Irish entity to service the growing market there.”

The news comes as the UK and Ireland wind services and maintenance company acquired a new Liebherr LG1750 lattice boom mobile crane to match the growing demand of the wind sector in the UK.

Expected to be predominantly deployed on onshore wind work, the new LG1750 joins an existing crane of the same class, an LR1750, a TC2800, and over 60 telescopic cranes in the 25-750-tonne range in GWP’s fleet.

“The purchase of this new Liebherr LG 1750 doubles our capability for specific wind project requirements so it’s a hugely significant investment for the company,” said Burke. “The new crane has already been deployed to Ireland on its first job installing wind turbines for Nordex at ABO Wind Ireland’s Sheskin Wind Farm in County Mayo and will then proceed to County Offaly to assist with the installation of turbines in County Offaly.”

GWP was founded in April 2021 by Global Port Services, a subset of Global Energy Group, to cope with the rising demand for wind energy services in the UK.
