Saga Fjordbase, Norway’s largest offshore supply base, is moving forward with its green transition by adding a new electric mobile harbour crane, the Liebherr LHM 280, to its operations.
This crane, ordered in April and set for delivery in early 2026, is designed to boost efficiency while reducing emissions.
The Liebherr LHM 280, equipped with an electric drive, features an 84-tonne winch and a 48-metre outreach. It’s tailored for versatile cargo handling, thanks to a built-in rotator. The crane is also engineered for operator comfort with a weather-protected staircase and includes an advanced reactive power compensation unit to optimise energy use, reducing strain on the local power grid.
“The LHM 280 is a strategic addition to our port,” said Dag Eikeland, VP Logistics at Saga Fjordbase. “Its electric drive and energy optimisation features directly support our efforts to reduce emissions and improve quay turnaround times. These are key factors in maintaining our position as a leading offshore logistics hub.”
Saga Fjordbase plays a critical role in offshore logistics, with around 2,000 vessel calls annually. The new crane will enhance the base’s ability to handle supply chain operations for offshore platforms, where reliability and quick turnaround times are essential. The base has already improved quay turnaround times by 30% thanks to custom logistics software, and the LHM 280’s rapid handling capabilities will complement these gains.
The collaboration between Saga Fjordbase and Liebherr reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and innovation. “We’ve worked closely with Saga Fjordbase to deliver a solution that fits their goals technically and operationally,” said Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH.
With the LHM 280, Saga Fjordbase is not just adding new equipment—it’s reinforcing its role as a leader in sustainable maritime logistics, ensuring resilience and efficiency for years to come.
