The Crane Industry Council of Australia (CICA) will host its next Business Essentials Webinar on June 3, focusing on the non-technical side of lifting operations and the role leadership plays in safety and performance on site.
Titled The Business of Lifting, the webinar will be presented by construction industry expert Andy Irvine and will explore the human factors that influence lifting operations, including communication, behaviour and supervision.
The session comes in response to investigations into a series of lifting incidents in 2022, which led to a stronger technical focus across the industry, including the development of the CICA Crane Lift Supervisors Course.
While acknowledging the work already done in improving technical capability, the webinar will focus on the other contributing factors identified in those investigations.
According to CICA, the session will examine the “human-centred controls and performance” that affect conditions on site and influence both safety and productivity outcomes.
Topics covered during the webinar will include recurring non-technical patterns seen in recent lifting incidents, the role of lead hands and supervisors in operational safety, and the relationship between people, process and behaviour on site.
The session will also look at how site leadership can influence customer perception, repeat business and company reputation, while providing practical indicators business owners can use to assess leadership capability within their own crews.
Irvine has more than 25 years of experience across civil construction, infrastructure and vocational education. He has an operational leadership background in civil construction and is the founder of Irvine Training Group. He is also the author of Managership: Leadership for Doers.
