Manitowoc has unveiled a prototype of its next-generation all-terrain crane, the Grove GMK5250L-2, at bauma 2025, hinting at major updates in both design and tech. This early look at the 250-tonne, five-axle crane showcases upgrades meant to improve ease of use, speed, and flexibility on the job site.
While the GMK5250L-2 shares its base specifications with the GMK5250L-1, the prototype reveals a new design direction. Both the carrier and superstructure cabs have been reworked. The superstructure cab gets an entirely fresh design, while the carrier cab is scaled up from those seen on Grove’s smaller cranes, to better suit larger machines.

The operator experience is also getting an upgrade. The crane will be equipped with the latest version of Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS 2.0). This new system integrates MAXbase 2.0, a smart outrigger positioning system that gives users flexibility when setting up the crane on uneven or tight job sites.
MAXbase 2.0 allows real-time load chart calculations based on the crane’s setup, helping operators lift faster and with more confidence. It also supports infinite outrigger configurations, meaning the crane can adapt to more working environments than before.
The GMK5250L-2 is still in development and is expected to enter the market in 2027. It’s currently undergoing Manitowoc’s Voice of the Customer program, which gathers real-world feedback from crane operators and buyers to shape the final product.
