UK-based heavy lifting and logistics specialist Allelys has deployed its Liebherr LG 1550 to lift and shift a 176-tonne steam turbine generator to the Port of Sutton Bridge in Spalding.
The unit itself measured up to 14m long, 4.8m wide, and 4.5m high, with Allelys needing to complete route studies from Peterborough to Spalding in order to identify a viable route. According to Allelys, all “pinch points” along the route were identified, with necessary solutions produced to coordinate with the relevant authorities.
“For this operation, our team undertook the complete full-service solution, including engineering, route surveys, project management, transportation and lifting,” said Shahid Islam, Project Manager at Allelys. “The 35-mile (56km) road journey took a total of 3.5 hours travel time and the entire journey was meticulously monitored by our transportation team to ensure safe and successful delivery.”
To shift the 176-tonne steam turbine generator, Allelys’ in-house engineering team designed a transport solution centred around using a specialist trailer in a 16-axle configuration. After being loaded and securely lashed onto the modular trailer and completing its journey, the 176-tonne steam generator was offloaded by the Liebherr LG1550 onto a coaster vessel, where it would head for Antwerp before being shipped to Singapore.
“I am proud to say that the team executed the lifting flawlessly within a critical allotted time frame, and above all, ensured the safety of our team and the project,” said Islam.
