All-electric cranes mark new era on the Mississippi River

Associated Terminals and Liebherr Maritime Cranes have marked a major step forward in river logistics with the christening of two all-electric CBG 500 E transshipment cranes in New Orleans, United States.

The cranes are the first of their kind to operate on the Lower Mississippi River and are mounted on Associated Terminals’ next-generation barges. Together, they deliver high-capacity bulk handling with zero local exhaust emissions, supporting more sustainable operations along the river.

Each CBG 500 E crane is designed for heavy-duty bulk handling, with grab capacities of up to 90 tonnes in sheltered waters and up to 65 tonnes in open water. A lattice boom provides up to 50 metres of outreach. The cranes also feature Liebherr’s LiCaTronic energy recovery system, which captures energy during braking and load lowering to improve efficiency. Remote diagnostics and ergonomic cabins further support safe and reliable operation.

The cranes are installed on newly designed barges built to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The barges feature hybrid-ready power systems, intelligent load management and reduced fuel consumption. Keel cooling technology helps lower maintenance needs and minimises environmental impact.

The christening ceremony was held on the banks of the Mississippi River and brought together hundreds of guests from the maritime industry, politics and business. The event marked the end of months of collaboration between Associated Terminals and Liebherr, and symbolised the start of a new chapter in electrified river operations.

“The christening of these cranes marks a defining moment for our operations,” said Zeljko Franks, Chief Operating Officer at Associated Terminals. “It represents years of planning and partnership coming to life. By introducing this technology on the Mississippi, we are combining performance with sustainability in a way that will benefit our customers, our communities, and the river for years to come.”

The first crane was delivered in mid-2025 and is already in operation, where it has quickly become a key asset for bulk handling. The second crane arrived later in 2025 and was assembled ahead of the ceremony. It will now enter service alongside the first unit.

The project reflects a long-standing partnership between Liebherr and Associated Terminals, focused on innovation, efficiency and environmental responsibility. Both companies worked closely from early planning through to commissioning to ensure the cranes met operational and sustainability goals.

“The christening reflects what can be achieved through collaboration and forward thinking,” said Gregor Hillen, Sales Manager for Port- and Transshipment Solutions at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH. “We are proud to stand alongside Associated Terminals in shaping the future of river cargo handling.”

The two cranes are expected to set a new benchmark for sustainable transshipment and support the wider electrification of inland waterway operations across the United States.
