Agtrans co-founder Phil D’Ath retires after 13 years

Agtrans, a well-known name in New Zealand’s Taranaki craneage and commercial transport industry, has announced the retirement of co-founder Phil D’Ath, marking the end of an era for the company.

Phil established Agtrans in 2012 with fellow founder CJ Mahony. The business began with two trucks and two tractors servicing the region’s agricultural sector. Today, it has grown into a trusted transport partner for a wide range of industries, offering heavy haulage, craneage, and truck-mounted crane services across Taranaki.

CJ Mahony, Managing Director, said Phil’s retirement signals a new stage for the company.

“Phil’s departure opens the door for an exciting new chapter for Agtrans. While we’ll miss his presence around the depot, we’re excited for him as he embarks on his next adventure — and we’re equally excited about the opportunities ahead for our team and customers,” said CJ.

Phil drew on his background in farming, building, and precast concrete to help shape the business from day one. His strong people skills and focus on client relationships helped build the company’s culture and reputation.

“In the early years, it was all hands-on deck. Phil’s ability to connect with people, and his commitment to our client relationships have been central to who we are today,” said CJ.

Phil and his wife Helen will soon begin a two-year motorbike journey from Nordkap, the northernmost point of Europe, to Cape Town in South Africa.

Reflecting on the company’s growth, Phil said: “If you think you can, or think you can’t, your probably right. Both CJ & I thought we could, and here we are – quite a way on from two trucks, two tractors, and the two of us.

“Thanks to CJ for being a supportive business partner, if we hadn’t aimed for the sky and challenged ourselves and our team to adopt new skills and technology, Agtrans would not look the way it does today.”

CJ confirmed Agtrans remains privately owned and that operations will continue as normal for customers and suppliers. A planned internal transition has already taken place, with Phil Harrison appointed Projects Manager and Logan Willemen stepping into the role of Operations Manager.

“Our team is committed to a seamless transition. We look forward to continuing to serve our customers with the same values, commitment to excellence, and strong partnerships that have defined us since day one,” said CJ.

In a final message, Phil expressed his thanks to everyone who contributed to the company’s journey.

“It takes a lot of people to create a company the scale of Agtrans – to become as successful as it’s become. I’m appreciative of all the customers, the staff and suppliers we’ve had over the years – thank you to everyone.”
