Purchasing the GMK6400-1 in December 2023 through Grove’s local dealer, MGX Equipment Services, the crane has been immediately deployed on tasks throughout Virginia, such as removing lock gates on a major waterway in Chesapeake and setting two precast panelised builds at a water treatment plant. According to owner of W.O. Grubb, Bill Grubb, the allure of the newer technology in the Grove mobile crane prompted the company to upgrade from the GMK6300L to the GMK6400-1.

“We were keen on embracing the newest technology and improved roadability without compromising on lifting performance,” he said. “With MegaWingLift and luffing capabilities, this marks our first investment in a brand new, large all-terrain crane tailored for the Portsmouth-Newport News market.”

According to the manufacturer, the GMK6400-1 is the “most robust” six-axle crane on the market. Possessing lifting capacities up to 400 tonnes, the machine features a 60m main telescopic boom and a maximum hook height of 136m, achievable through its extensive luffing and fly jib options. Furthermore, the machine is equipped with Manitowoc’s patented ‘MegaWingLift’ that allows the crane to erect itself, while the crane is also capable of self-rigging in under 20 minutes, making the crane a highly viable option for jobs requiring minimal logistical processes and a more streamlined set up process. According to Director of Sales at MGX Equipment, Bruce Austin, the dealer is “very excited” about the addition of the GMK6400-1 to Grubb’s “already impressive” fleet, detailing his conviction about the machine’s performance.

“MGX and W. O. Grubb have had a successful partnership for several years,” he said. “With the capabilities of this crane, I am confident that it will perform exceptionally well for them in the Mid-Atlantic region.”

W.O. Grubb is a family-owned company with an extensive fleet, operating in the Mid-Atlantic region’s crane rental industry since its establishment in 1962.
